Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Advisor
Chaitra (Chai) Shenoy is the Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Advisor at the Office of Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment, Bureau for Economic Growth, Education & Environment, USAID. Chai provides technical assistance and guidance to USAID missions and Washington-based operating units on issues related to GBV prevention and response. Chai also assists the agency in providing gender and inclusive development trainings, and develops and strengthens policies related to gender equality, women’s empowerment, and sexual misconduct. Prior to joining USAID, Chai was the Attorney Advisor in the Office of the General Counsel at the Peace Corps. She has also worked at various non-profit legal organizations representing clients in GBV civil cases. With over 20 years of experience in the anti-violence movement, Chai has been featured in Washington Post, Associated Press, Huffington Post, and DC television affiliate on-air news programs, including WAMU’s Kojo Nnamdi Show for her work on GBV. Chai is originally from the Bay Area, California, and received her B.A. at UCLA and her J.D. at American University, Washington College of Law.
